Under Australian heavy vehicle standards, a compromised chassis is a defect that puts the operator, the load, and every other road user at risk. The three most common failure modes we see at our Nunawading workshop:

  • Impact damage — a collision, kerb strike, or overload event that bends, twists, or cracks a chassis rail. Even a single event can compromise the rail's load-bearing capacity along its full length.
  • Fatigue cracking — stress fractures that develop over time from load cycles, often found at cross-member welds or mounting brackets. These cracks start small and grow with every kilometre under load.
  • Structural failure — full or partial separation of a chassis member that renders the vehicle unroadworthy immediately. At this point the truck stops at a full stop.

Delaying action on a damaged chassis pushes the repair cost up and the options down. A fatigue crack caught early is a weld repair; left to run, it becomes a section replacement — and in the meantime the vehicle is operating with a defect that a roadside inspector or a load failure won't overlook.

Step 1 — Full Structural Assessment

We start with a thorough visual inspection of the chassis rails, cross-members, and mounting points, checking for cracks, deformation, and crack origin points. Measurements for twist and bow are taken to establish the full extent of any structural deviation before any repair work is planned.

Step 2 — Structural Diagnosis and Repair Planning

Once the assessment is complete, we determine the repair approach based on the extent of cracking, the vehicle's load-bearing requirements, and whether a weld repair or section replacement is the right call. We'll talk you through what we've found before any work starts.

Step 3 — Repair and Weld by Qualified Tradespeople

Structural welding, reinforcement plating, or cross-member replacement is carried out by Tandem Drive's qualified trades staff at our Nunawading workshop. We use appropriate materials and methods for each repair type to restore the chassis to its designed load capacity.

Step 4 — Post-Repair Inspection Before Return

Before the vehicle leaves the workshop, we check alignment, confirm weld integrity, and verify that the repaired chassis meets the requirements for the vehicle's intended load and operating conditions. The truck goes back to work when the repair is right — not before.
